step 1 - the figure is one of the most classic barbarians I have ever
seen, comes from Grenadier/Nemo and is a standard bearer
(without standard) in true 25mm. I have primed
it black like the 90% of my miniatures. |
 |
step 2 - thin down some Mahogany Brown and
cover all the flesh area. This helps to clearly see the muscles and give a good base color for the next layers. |
 |
step 3 - mix some Mahogany Brown with Sunny
Skintone and start painting the muscles leaving the mahogany brown in the deep
recesses. (other good colors are also 955 Flat Flesh, 927
Dark Flesh and 815 Basic Skintone for female characters). |
 |
step 4 - add some more Sunny Skintone
(50/50) and define better the muscles. You have to leave a small area of the previous layer to shade the color and accentuate the impression of depth. If you like to draw muscles stripes you can start from this layer. |
 |
| step 5 - now the Sunny Skintone is 70/30 with the Mahogany Brown and with this layer you define the raised areas of muscles. |
 |
| step 6 - with the Sunny Skintone paint the highlight on the most raised areas and give some more volume to the muscles. |
 |
| step 7 - using a very thinned down Beige paint some highlight on the pectoral, lower thigh, shoulders, nails and where you think the light will reflect more. After a couple of minutes use a clean brush and brush all over the miniature some clear water, this helps to smooth
together the colors and remove the chalky effect that some Vallejo color can leave. You can also use a very little bit of brown ink with the water to smooth down better the color transition but this tone down a bit the color |
