Flags and insignias

Flags and insignias

In some miniatures, to increase the realism, is possible to combine a flag or some insignias. This is especially important when you paint groups of miniatures that pool together in a army.

You can use many materials:
- fabric
- paper
- plastic sheets
- metallic sheets

Fabric offer a great realism and allow to create "true" flags but it's difficult to shape.
It's possible to soak the flag with wallpaper paste and make some folds that will be fixed when the glue dry.

Paper is easy to color and you can print flags in your color printer or to photocopy them (in my Links page you can find a site with many historical and fantasy flags). But paper is too stiff and don't give realistic results.

Plastic has to be used as last resort because is the least advisable. The only case that you will obtain good results is to reproduce plates mounted on poles.

Metallic sheets, like aluminum foils for kitchen use, are the best material to use for the flags.
To build the Bretonnian's flag, cut a triangle from an aluminum cake tin (but you can use any metallic foil).
First step is to prime the metallic triangle, to give a good base to the color.
Then you can color your flag as you prefer, on both sides and let the color dry.
The flag will then glued to the pole and when the glue dry you can fold the flag to give the feeling that the wind move it.
